Know Your Belgian Ales: A Sub Zero Primer

Belgian ales at Sub Zero Microlounge Anchorage Alaska Abbaye de Rocs——Belgium
Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour. The initial impression in the first mouthful is a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness, with some traces of burnt wood.

Affligem Dobbel—–Belgium
Mild, malty. Fairly high yeast flavor, particularly for the style. Light Belgian Airiness. Pretty strong. Lots of flavor. Mildly dry. A little sweet, but not much. When the yeast is added, the beer becomes milder, and slightly better.

Belgian ales at Sub Zero Microlounge Anchorage Alaska Affligem Tripel—–Belgium
Very yeasty. Good Belgian Airiness. Sharp bite. Strong alcohol flavor. Very good. Very thick and creamy. Slightly heavy going down.

Affligem Noel—–Belgium
Malty & sweet. An excellent Belgian Ale. Yeasty. A bit of airiness. Kind of thick. Pretty strong, although average for Belgium. Has an aftertaste that lasts for a few days, which is a good thing. Lots of flavor.

Belzebuth Amber—–France
This immensely strong beer (15 per cent alcohol by volume) is said to be all-malt (i.e. not to contain other sugars). It is smooth, almost fluffy, starting candyish, with peppery alcohol flavours perhaps contributing to a spicy, surprising dryness.

Belgian ales at Sub Zero Microlounge Anchorage Alaska Boon Kreik—–Belgium
Bright red luster. Expressive, tart cherry aromas. Very flavorsome and mouthwatering, with a medium body and a touch of fruit sweetness lingering on the finish. A very drinkable, dryer style with lambic character to the fore.

Boon Gueze—–Belgium
Differs from other lambics in that it is unflavored by fruit. Aromas show leathery, wineycharacter. Tarter and more astringent than the "mariage parfait" gueuze, but still very rich and refreshing with a malty bite and fine beaded carbonation. Shows a of bitterness on the finish. Wonderfully balanced.

A top-fermented and full-bodied beer, described by Michael Jackson in The Great Beers of Belgium as "full in its golden colour and rounded maltiness, with warming alcohol, a perfumy hop character, and a great complexity of flavours."

Belgium
Nostradamus is a Belgian strong brown ale which is rich, warming and complex. It forms a light head and has a fine malt nose with hints of mocha. There is a touch of peppery and roasty notes in a satisfying finish.

(La) Caracole Saxo—–Belgium
Caracole Saxo is a pale strong Belgian golden ale - yeasty, appley and very smooth. Surprisingly easy-drinking considering the alcohol content.

(La) Caracole Troublette—–Belgium
The palate is notably dry and crisp, with the hoppy flavours more exposed and conventional than in the most typical Belgian wheats, and it's given a refreshing twist by a distinctly fruity, lemony tang and a flowery perfume with traces of elderflower.

Castelain Blond—–France
Golden coloured, it has a full body, a mellowness and a very delicate aroma.

Chimay Premiere (Red)—–Belgium
Chimay Red it is noted for its coppery color and creamy head. It has a light, fruity apricot aroma produced by the fermentation and those nuances are confirmed upon first taste and enhanced by a light touch of bitterness. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurized.

A hazy golden color and is especially characterised by its enticing aroma of muscat and raisins arising from an agreeable combination of fresh hops and yeast. The aroma complements a touch of bitterness which the beer leaves on the palate, a bitterness without acidity, but as part of a lingering and enjoyable aftertaste.

Chimay Grand Reserve ( Blue)—–Belgium
Distinguished by its strong character. It begins with a pleasant aroma of fresh yeast with a light, flowery rosy touch . Tasting only accentuates the pleasant sensations perceived in the aroma, while revealing a light but pleasant touch of roasted malt.

Corsendonk Pale Ale—–Belgium
Opens with a dry, lightly citric fruitiness on the palate and finishes with a a distinctive hop character. Corsendonk Abbey Pale will mature in bottle up to three years. Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate.

Corsendonk Christmas Ale—–Belgium
On the palate this silky smooth ale is predominantly malty, with smoky, spicy and citrusy notes, and a long, lingering finish that is lightly tart and malty. Round and well-balanced, it will be a welcome addition to holiday tables and parties.

Belgian ales at Sub Zero Microlounge Anchorage Alaska Delirium Nocturnum—–Belgium
Dark brown with ruby red highlights and has a complex aroma and a burnt coffee-like finish that is moderately dry and satisfyingly long.

Delirium Tremens—–Belgium
Blond and coppery color and a compact and abundant head. The beer has a nose of wheat and barley with traces of coriander and orange. It is full and round in the mouth, yet also spicy, with a pleasant bitterness to the taste.

Delirium Noel—–Belgium
Sweet and strong, a dark-brown winter beer from the brewery that makes Delerium Tremens.

Dupont Las Bon Vouex—–Belgium
Spicy and fruity, this beer is a hazy straw-colored brew which pours with a huge white head and leaves a fine lace pattern down the glass.

Hanssens Oude Gueze Lambic—–Belgium
Very dry, wild, authentic lambic style beer. This is what the style is meant to be. The sweet lambics are ok but none compare to Hannson's for complexity.

Hellekapelle Blond Artisanal Ale—–Belgium
Hellekapelle is a light yet full-bodied beer. It is slighly bitter with a distinct hop aroma.

Ipso Facto (It’s a fact)——Netherlands
A traditional Dutch barley wine named after the abbot of the Carthusian Order. It has a great palate of flavors and is intense and immensely rich in taste and color.

Jade French Country Ale—–France
Honeyed pale malt flavors with floral tones and a lovely light spiciness accompany the long finish of pale malt and honey The teeny bubbled, white, pillowy, and rocky foam rides the glass like a champ atop the hazy straw-like liquid.

Karmeliet Triple—–Belgium
Wheat, barley and oats are all used in their raw and malted form to create both a light crispness and creamy sweetness. Gentle bitterness and the bananas and vanilla character of the house yeast meld perfectly with the grains to create an exceptionally well rounded tripel.

Kwak—–Belgium
Kwak is a deep amber beer, with an earthy aroma; a licorice-like maltiness; nougat chewiness; and a warm, finish reminiscent of caramelized bananas. It is made from three malts, including some wheat, and white candy sugar is added in the kettle. ~Michael Jackson's .

Grande Reserve is amber in color. Full bodied, full flavored with an extensive aroma and a warm sweet finish.

La Binchoise Brune—–Belgium
Dark red brown in color with a good fluffy head. It has a rich spicy malt nose and a big hoppy bite. Brune presents a rich, fruity, dark coffee character with a hint of orange peel as well.

La Binchoise Blond—–Belgium
Suggestions of ripe peaches, lemon juice and faint mint. Maltiness is on the dry side with a touch of honey in the beginning and clean husk in the end. Foggy sunshine golden yellow colour.

Belgian ales at Sub Zero Microlounge Anchorage Alaska La Chouffe Golden Ale—–Belgium
A fresh citric hop aroma and a very spicy palate with lashings of lemon and lime hops. Addition of some sediment increases the graininess of texture and adds to the spice.

McChouffe Brown Ale—–Belgium
An unusual blend of fruit, malt and a strong herbal element in the nose. The palate is full, rich and complex with a spicy herbal character and a strong roasted, chocolate malt taste.

Nice Chouffe—–Belgium
Rich in character and flavor, spicy and fruity with rich tones of sweet malt.

Maredsous 8—–Belgium
Creamy foaming dark-colored beer with a well-balance flavor of malt and hops. Amber colored head with a tint of yellow. Strong with a hint of port flavor.

Maredsous 10—–Belgium
Golden beer with a characteristically fresh bouquet and sweet after-taste. Medium gold color, very malty and somewhat sweet. Some hop spiciness. Finish is clean and smooth.

Belgian ales at Sub Zero Microlounge Anchorage Alaska (Trappist) Rochefort 8—–Belgium
Brownish in color and has a short-lived head and a noticeable fruity aroma with a touch of roastiness. It has an assertive but well balanced bitterness in the mouth, with hints of banana and pear and figs.

(Trappist) Rochefort 10—–Belgium
A spicy and roasty aroma of barley and caramel, notes of apple and chocolate in the mouth and a long bitter finish. A smooth, strong and very enjoyable beer indeed.

(Trappist) Orval Ale—–Belgium
Sunset-orange color, with a fruity and slightly acidic bouquet, firm body, profound hop bitterness and a long, satisfying finish.

Riva Lucifer—–Belgium
Lightly hoppy and yeastily spicy, with faint caramel malt notes and a touch of citrus and estery fruit. Surprisingly fruity, but with a strong hoppy bitterness. There is a warming, malty, vanilla quality to it, which develops into an alcohol kick towards the end.

Steenbrugge Tripel Blond—–Belgium
A strong, golden beer, clear with light beige medium sized head - nice lacing on this one. Fruity hops, spices, malt and yeast plus hint of alcohol in the aroma. Medium body, fresh tangy orangey start, sweetish middle and an increasingly bitter, also slightly alcoholic finish.

(Trappist) Achel 8 Ale—–Belgium
very light pale yellow or straw, made slightly cloudy by a loose sediment, with a low, lacy head. The aroma is soft and very subtle, overall dry with scents of hops, yeast, vanilla and melon-like fruit.

Trappist) Westvleteren—–Belgium
Starts with a fruity, molasses-like nose with hints of figs and dates. Dark amber-brown color. Big warm round sweet malt taste fills your mouth completely. Hints of spices accent the full body. The alcohol comes through and intensifies the flavor. There is a long subtle bitterness at the end. Perfect balance.

A murky golden pour with a fluffy white head.Big yeasty,spicy nose. Bubble gum flavor with banana and clove dominant.

Unibroue Quelque Chose—–Canada
This versatile beer was specifically developed as a winter beer because, when warmed to 70ºC (160ºF), it can be taken as a hot drink. On the other hand, on the rocks, it is a wonderful aperitif. The cherries are soaked for months in slightly bitter ale before being blended into the beer. Quelque Chose is made with dark roasted malts, and the end result is something commonly known as an authentic nectar.

Belgian ales at Sub Zero Microlounge Anchorage Alaska Urthel Hibernus Quentum Tripel—–Belgium
Clear golden in color with brilliant foam. Hibernus Quentum is a very drinkable beer, with flavors of fresh apples and a hoppy tanginess.

Urthel Tonicum Finiboldhus Amber—–Belgium
The brewers caught public attention by creating a world populated by tiny Erthels, who drink Urthel Tonicum Finiboldhus as a cure for baldness (Tonicum = a"tonic or cure;" Finiboldhus = "to end baldness"). Dark amber in color. The beer has an earthy, moderately malty and faintly sweet flavor.

Vuuve—–Belgium
A classic Belgian white beer. 60% barley malt, 40% wheat malt, hops, coriander, and fresh organic orange peel. Cloudy pale yellow in color and a nose bursting with tangerine, coriander, licorice, and vanilla.

Zatte —– Bie
Zatte —– Bie is a traditional Belgian strong dark ale which is produced in small quantities using only natural ingredients.
